Episode 16: All Things WhizBang and Bob Negen!
Monday Jun 30, 2025
Monday Jun 30, 2025
Join host Patrick Keiser for a special episode of Main Street Matters as he sits down with Bob Negen, the respected founder and owner of Whizbang Retail Training. A seasoned retailer who built an incredibly successful business before launching another venture to teach other retailers, Bob has been a vital supporter of Heart on Main Street.
In this insightful conversation, Bob shares his unique journey, starting with his very first retail endeavor, The Mackinaw Kite Company. He recounts how, with less than $3,000 in cash and no prior retail experience, he opened one of the world's first specialty kite stores in the tourist area of Mackinaw City, Michigan. Despite the statistical improbability of its survival (less than 1% chance), the Mackinaw Kite Company, now owned by his brother Steve, has thrived for almost 40 years, growing into a multi-million dollar business.
Bob openly discusses the challenges of his early years, including a terrible location and the initial struggle to attract customers. He shares how they innovated to get people in the door, such as "fly them, they buy them" by filling the sky with kites to draw attention. He also reveals the stress and lack of "back of the house" skills that defined the first 15 years, until his wife, Susan, a former department store executive, brought essential knowledge of inventory management (like "open to buy") and merchandise mix.
Key takeaways from this episode include:
•The "Retailer's Journey"
•Overcoming Adversity
•The Genesis of WhizBang
•Investment in Knowledge
•Customer-Centric Philosophy
•Building a Collaborative Culture
This conversation offers a wealth of insights for anyone looking to start, grow, or improve a retail business, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, adaptation, and a deep understanding of customer needs....
